One of the best ways to teach a child patience, perseverance concentration, and love for nature is to teach them how to fish! Fishing offers a child life lessons and experiences they'll never forget.
How to get children interested in fishing!
#1) Research local ponds and lakes!
Remember they are learning a new skill, that requires patience and sitting around patiently isn't always fun...
Do a little bit of research on the lakes and ponds in your area. Look for one that is stocked with plenty of fish. Stop by a local tackle shop and ask questions. These guys usually know the ins and outs of all the local areas, and what baits the fish like.
#2) Size doesn't matter!
When a child is first learning how to fish size isn't as important as quanity! Don't get focused on catching a trophy fish when there's plenty more smaller fish to catch.
#3) To teach patience requires patience
Remember children look up to you, and want to be like you. Don't get upset if things aren't going exactly as planned. Fishing is full of the unexpected and things don't always go as planned!
Make up games, little competitions, talk, just enjoy being outside. Even if you're not catching anything fun can be had. Keeping a child occupied will keep them interested. Tic-tac-toe in the dirt, I-spy, 20 questions are all great ways to pass time while waiting for the fish to bite
Beginners rod/reel and tackle box.
Whats needed to take a child on their first fishing adventure? There's tons of different rods, reels, tackle, lures out there to choose from. Some that are nothing more then gimmicks, to hidden gems that never seem to fail. Below are some of my favorites for beginner fishers!
Rod/Reel combo
A childs first fishing pole doesn't need to be super fancy or expensive. It needs to be durable enough to withstand a child and reliable enough keep reeling in fish. There's a few different types of reels out there. Push buttons, open faced, and bait casters. Push button reels are definitely the easiest to learn with and are great for the younger children 4-7 year range.
The Zebco 404 spin cast combo is perfect for just learning how to cast. It has a shorter 5'6" pole that allows for better control and the reel is reliable enough to not give out on the first big fish! You can purchase a combo by clicking here that also includes some extra tackle!
Once a child learns the basics of casting, an open faced reel is the way to go. These reels require a bit more hand eye coordination. But they are a bit more rugged and versatile. One of my favorite rod/reel combos I've used along with my kids is the Quantum strategy spinning combo. These reels offer great quality at reasonable prices. They will not disappoint and they last! Here's a link to check them out yourself. Quantum Strategy.
Baitcasters! These reels require a lot practice! I do not recommend these for a beginner.
Tackle Box/Bag
Every angler needs a way to store, organize, and protect their fishing tackle. Tackle bags offer all of this, plus they can be slung over your shoulder and easily carried to your fishing hole. The Plano 3600 deluxe tackle case is an excellent starter bag. It offers a molded waterproof base for durability, and the front even offers a molle system to store your pliers, scissors, and other tools you may need readily available. You can purchase them on Amazon by clicking here.
Tackle/Lures
When a child is first learning to fish, you really can't beat live bait (red worms, minnows, crickets) on a hook with a bobber. It is the best way to ensure fish are caught! Of course having a small selection of lures to go along with that is never a bad thing! Below I've listed a few of my favorites that are great for beginners and have never failed me!
1) Senko rubber worms
These guys are versatile! You can wacky rig them, Texas-rig, Carolina-rig, Weightless. They are my go-to and always produce! You can find a nice assorted kit of these right here!
2) In-line Spinners
One of the best lures to catch a wide range of fish from bream and bluegills to pike and walleye. They are simple to use. Casting with a slow retrieve never fails! Spinners come in multiple sizes and colors. For beginners I would recommend a small assortment of smaller spinners because they will catch multiple species small and large. This kit offers everything you need at a reasonable price!
3) Top Water Lures
No tackle bog is complete without a couple top water lures. The thrill that comes when a fish strikes your lure as its dancing across the waters surface is unbelievable! From buzzbaits to poppers, to top water frogs each have their own unique capabilities. Although my all time favorite top water lure is Heddons Spit n Image. I have landed my personal best largemouth and crappie on one of these!
#1 Thing to remember is have FUN!
Teaching a child to fish not only teaches them valuable life lessons and skills but it's also a great way to build fun memories. Nothing beats the feeling you will get when you see the smile a child has reeling in their first fish!
